“Granny, I’m home,” I call, as I arrive home from work.
I head to my room, the delicious smell of dinner cooking in the air.
“I’m home, Ren.”
“Welcome home, Aoba.”
I enter the room, expecting to find Ren sitting on the bed reading a magazine… but for some reason, he is sitting in a very proper manner on the side of the bed.
He isn’t even reading? It looks like he has been like that for a while, then, waiting very intently for me to come home. And, does he look kind of nervous, somehow…?
This is pretty out of the ordinary, I think. Ren looks at me and stands up.
“Aoba, it’s nearly time for dinner.”
“Yeah, it smells absolutely amazing,” I answer, studying him carefully.
I’m uneasy. He usually looks me right in the eyes, but he’s not really meeting my gaze.
“Ren, what’s wrong?”
“…What do you mean?”
“You just seem off, okay. You’re being weirdly fidgety, you know,” I point out.
Ren can’t lie. He immediately hangs his head like he’s ashamed.
“What? Is something worrying you? Come on, first off sit down,” I say, taking off my jacket and putting down my bag.
I sit on the bed and pat the spot beside me in invitation. But, before he sits down beside me, Ren holds something out.
“Aoba… ….Take this.”
I look at it. He’s holding out a box tiny enough to fit in the palm of his hand.
“Ooh, what could it be!”
Is today supposed to be some special day? Feeling a little excited, I take the box and open it.
Inside are four chocolates. They are partitioned very prettily down the middle and from side to side, and the chocolates themselves are cute. Don’t tell me this is for Valentine’s?
Oh yeah, today is February 14th. I did sort of pick up on it at work and while I was walking in town, but I completely forgot about it once I came home.
I look up questioningly at Ren to find him drawing his brows in worry.
“Where did you get these?”
“…I bought them today.”
That surprises me a little. It also makes it suddenly clear why Ren looks so sorry.
Ren has become quite used to being in a human… in Sei’s body by now, but just in case, I absolutely always go with him when he goes out.
Theres always a chance his body could give out and he’d be in trouble, and there are also many things he still doesn’t know as a human. That’s why he’d took heed meticulously, but…
“I’m sorry…,’ Ren says, sounding truly apologetic. “Maybe you’re angry, seeing as you told me not to go out alone… but I really wanted to go out by myself today.”
“To buy this?”
“Yes. I have been thinking for a while now how I might best convey my feelings of gratitude to you, Aoba. And then, I learned it was Valentine’s Day today… But.”
He looks at the floor, even more apologetic.
“I didn’t have much on hand, so that was about all I could afford…”
I’d only left Ren a small amount of money for just in case. I’m normally always with him, anyway.
So he bought this for me using that…
I stared at the chocolate in silence.
“…Aoba, are you angry?” Ren asked, sounding anxious.
I turn to his worried face and make sure he can see my huge smile.
“No, not at all.”
“I’m really, really happy. Thank you, Ren.”
Ren breathes out a deep sigh, as though the weight is finally off his shoulders.
“I tried going into a shop that seemed to be selling chocolate, but the women inside all… um, they seemed to be keeping an eye on me. It made me think perhaps I was doing something wrong, and I became uneasy,”
“Well… you weren’t doing anything wrong, but I guess you would draw attention. Today is for women to give chocolates, see.”
You’d have to be pretty brave to be a lone guy going to buy chocolate in a shop full of ladies. I’m sure Ren felt uncomfortable.
Thinking about how far he went to buy these for me, I feel something other than happiness, something indescribable, welling up inside me.
“You know what, I just realised I have some reconsidering to do.”
“M-hm. I’ve been worrying about you too much. It’s not like I can just stop worrying, of course, but you’re not a kid, are you? I need to leave you to make your own calls from now on.”
I slowly close the lid on the box and stand up.
“Thank you so much for these, okay? I’ll savour them after dinner. Your feelings definitely came through.”
“I see. I am so very grateful to you, Aoba. …Thank you, as always.”
“The pleasure is mine,” I reply. That’s always Ren’s line.
Ren blinks in slight surprise, then smiles in happiness.
